  • A rare allergic reaction to a tick bite
  • Caused by a neurotoxin in saliva of a female tick
  • Begins with weakness in legs
  • Paralysis begins in the lower legs and moves up the body
  • Lungs become paralyzed
  • Can be fatal unless the tick is found and removed in time
  • Once the tick is removed, the patient recovers
  • The tick is often on the head, usually at the back, at the hairline
  • The tick can be on the neck, back or other location
